History and Development

Universitas Gadjah Mada is considered as the oldest higher education institution in Indonesia. Its vision is, “to be a pioneer world class national University, excellent and innovative, to serve the nation and humanity based on national cultural values and the national Ideology, Pancasila”. The vision is inspired to serve the spirit of Tridarma Higher Institution (Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi), consisted of teaching, research, and community services. To carry out their vision and mission, UGM has provided its academia with a wide range of opportunities to develop creativity and innovation in their fields through the support of sophisticated infrastructure and information technology. As a research university, UGM has 18 faculties, vocational school and graduate school and also has developed 25 study centers on diverse scientific fields.


The early government of the Republic of Indonesia had realized that Indonesia has rich forest resources and must be supported by human resources from professional education background. Faculty of Forestry UGM establishment was inspired by the inadequate higher education institution at that era. Initially, faculty of forestry once is a part of Faculty of Agriculture before it become separated and become independent faculty in 1963. Since then, the faculty has graduated numerous notable alumni, such as Prof. Dr. Ir. Achmad Soemitro (the former of the Faculty Dean for 3 periods), Prof. Dr. Ir. Soekotjo (the former of the Rector of Universitas Bengkulu and the former of the Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP), Ir. Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo (the Minister of Forestry, the former Director General of Forest Factory), Prof. Dr. Soenardi Prawirohatmodjo and Prof. Dr. Ir. Oemi Hani’in Suseno.


Faculty of Forestry UGM has embarked long academic journey since its establishment and has been contributed significantly not only to science community but also to wider community. To assure its top-notch education and research quality, the faculty has also been improving its infrastructure and human resource continuously. They also managed multidisciplinary collaboration as their commitment to ensure comprehensive approach for greater impact.
