Parents Association Meeting for the 2020-2021

 

Dr. Budiadi (Dean) and Dr. Joko Sulistyo (Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs) attend on virtual meeting of Parents Association for the 2020-2021.

Faculty of Forestry UGM holds annual meeting with the Parents Association (Potma) every year. This annual meeting is a forum for communication related to academics and non-academics between Potma and Faculty Management. In 2021, the meeting between Potma for the 2020-2021 and the management of Faculty of Forestry UGM was held virtually on Wednesday, February 23, 2021 which was attended by 219 parents.

In this meeting, Faculty management presented the admissions of 294 student for the 2020-2021 from 6,186 registrants, education and learning facilities including the Wanagama education forest, and the Getas field campus, the field and scope of four Departments at the Faculty, distribution of study load in the Undergraduate Study Program, learning activities in Semester II 2020/2021 with a blended learning system and the plans for softskills development activities in Wanagama learning and the scope and job profile of alumni. In this semester, the 2020-2021 students will stay on the dormitory on Wanagama Education Forest for for a month to do attending lecture, practice works, global competencies exposure from alumni and professionals, field works and softskill development activities.

In this meeting, The Dean of the Faculty of Forestry warmly welcomed the parents. He hoped that this good communication could be maintained until the students graduated. The Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs talked on the admissions of 294 student for the 2020-2021 from 6,186 registrants, education and learning facilities including the Wanagama education forest, and the Getas field campus, the field and scope of four Departments at the Faculty, distribution of study load in the Undergraduate Study Program, learning activities in Semester II 2020/2021 with a blended learning system and the plans for softskills development activities in Wanagama learning and the scope and job profile of alumni. In this semester, the 2020-2021 students will stay on the dormitory on Wanagama Education Forest for for a month to do attending lecture, practice works, global competencies exposure from alumni and professionals, field works and softskill development activities. The Head of Forestry Study Program explained the laboratory facilities that support teaching and learning activities (KBM), semester credit system, the assessment of academic achievement, the selection of major, learning evaluation, grade point average (GPA), the evaluation of study period and graduation. Dr. Emma Soraya as Head of the Forestry Study Program (S1) also explained the 2018 curriculum based on the outcome based education (OBE) which is implemented in the Undergraduate Program at the Faculty of Forestry UGM.

FIELD PRACTICE ON SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT (KTU 3004)

 

Field Practice on Sustainable Forest Management (PHL) (KTU 3004) Semester I 2020/2021 was held on February 17-28, 2021 in BDH Playen, KPH Yogyakarta. The field practice aims to furnish students on the ability to explain, perform and organize the components of sustainable forest management in a forest management unit. The forest stands for SFM practice were teak and eucalyptus stands. This is intended to provide students with an understanding of sustainable forest management based on timber forest products and non-timber forest products.

In the current condition of Covid-19, the practical activities were carried out by implementing health protocols in accordance with the direction of the UGM COVID-19 Task Force. The Health Protocol includes carrying a health/Covid-19 free certificate, wearing a mask, always using a hand sanitizer, and maintaining a physical distancing during the activities.

The material in PHL field practice were forest area organization, forest planning, forestry techniques (harvesting, regeneration, maintenance, and protection), forest resource conservation, forest village community socio-economy, forest resource planning, forest resource utilization, and forest management unit administration. These materials enhance the student’s understanding on the coordinating of sustainable forest management components in a forest management unit. In addition, the practice was carried out in forest areas, the practice was also carried out by visiting the sawmill processing industry, furniture production and eucalyptus oil processing.

Field Practice Activities, Faculty of Forestry, UGM during New Normal of Covid-19 Infection

 

Entering the New Normality era during Covid-19 pandemic, the Faculty of Forestry UGM organizes services and activities both academic and non-academic with implementing strict health protocols. Academic activities that can be carried out by students are included research for undergraduate thesis, and field practices. Field practices are carried out by students online and offline by staying at a boarding house/house in Yogyakarta during the practical implementation. The principles of this field practices are:

  1. Students stay at their boarding house or at home in Yogyakarta and depart from there to the field (practice location) in the morning and return there in the afternoon
  2. Students trip in small teams or groups to the practice location
  3. The practice location is the forest area in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas
  4. Students bring their personal equipment for praying and personal protective, and also supplies
  5. Strict implementation of health protocols on trips and at the practice location (mandatory wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, and washing hands frequently with soap or hand sanitizer).
  6. The faculty helps providing facilities such as masks and hand sanitizers.

The Field Practice of Sustainable Forest Management (PUPHL) took place from 3-13 September 2020 (11 days), the participants were 139 students (divided by 5 people for each team) with 9 co-assistants and 19 lecturers. PUPHL during the Covid-19 pandemic was designed differently from the regular ones which was usually held at the Getas Field Campus for 23 days. The practical activities (offline) were carried out in the forest stands in Yogyakarta Forest Management Agency (FMA).

The Field Practice of Introduction to Forestry (PIK/forestry camping) was held on the weekends of September 2020 (19 & 26; 20 & 27) in Wanagama Educational Forest from morning to evening. The number of participants was 279 people (divided by 4 groups @ 60 people). This PIK Field Practice carrying out during the Covid-19 pandemic was different from the regular ones which required students staying in Wanagama dormitory and practicing in the field for 3 days.

The field practicing for forest type and utilization on the mountain forest plantation in Tawangmangu

Field Practice for Forest Type and Utilization (KL) were held on the weekends of October 2020 (3 & 4; 11 & 11; 17 & 18) in Tawangmangu for natural forests and upland plantation forests, in Imogiri for natural forests and lowland plantations, and in Baros for coastal forests and mangroves. In the KL practice during the Covid-19 pandemic, students traveled from their dormitories to the practice location 3 times on the weekends, which was different from the regular one which took 5 days for travelling and practicing in remote forest location areas such as Banyuwangi or Batu Raden and so on
