FIELD PRACTICE ON SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT (KTU 3004)
Field Practice on Sustainable Forest Management (PHL) (KTU 3004) Semester I 2020/2021 was held on February 17-28, 2021 in BDH Playen, KPH Yogyakarta. The field practice aims to furnish students on the ability to explain, perform and organize the components of sustainable forest management in a forest management unit. The forest stands for SFM practice were teak and eucalyptus stands. This is intended to provide students with an understanding of sustainable forest management based on timber forest products and non-timber forest products.
In the current condition of Covid-19, the practical activities were carried out by implementing health protocols in accordance with the direction of the UGM COVID-19 Task Force. The Health Protocol includes carrying a health/Covid-19 free certificate, wearing a mask, always using a hand sanitizer, and maintaining a physical distancing during the activities.
The material in PHL field practice were forest area organization, forest planning, forestry techniques (harvesting, regeneration, maintenance, and protection), forest resource conservation, forest village community socio-economy, forest resource planning, forest resource utilization, and forest management unit administration. These materials enhance the student’s understanding on the coordinating of sustainable forest management components in a forest management unit. In addition, the practice was carried out in forest areas, the practice was also carried out by visiting the sawmill processing industry, furniture production and eucalyptus oil processing.
